Uploading to Aggregators and Other Stores

Because Vellum creates specialized output for the largest online stores, you’ll have best results when you upload your eBooks directly to them.

If you would like to upload to a store not currently supported by Vellum, or if you’d prefer to use an aggregator like Smashwords or Draft2Digital, you can optionally create a Generic EPUB version of your book.

Generic EPUB uses the older EPUB2 format, and while it lacks specializations for each platform, it is designed for compatibility, and suitable for use with other stores or aggregators.

Note: While the Generic EPUB file is designed to work across many platforms, it is not designed to be uploaded to Amazon. When uploading to Amazon, always use the mobi file generated by Vellum.

In the Generate sheet, make sure that you’ve enabled Generic EPUB:

Since this eBook file will be listed in several stores, you will want to make sure that all of your Store Links include a Generic URL.

Note: Because of the low file size limits in place by aggregators and by stores they distribute to, the Generic EPUB file uses low resolution images. More details can be found in File Size Considerations.
