Importing From Pages
Apple’s Pages application uses a proprietary file format, so it isn’t possible to import a .pages file directly. This page shows you how to export a Word file from Pages, and how to use styles to make sure it imports cleanly into Vellum.
Export to Word
If you’ve written your manuscript with Pages, you can export a .docx file that can be imported into Vellum.
To begin, use File ▸ Export To ▸ Word:
This will present a dialog to export your document:
Press Save and Pages will prompt you for the location to save the exported file. Once the .docx file is exported, you can import it directly into Vellum.
Using Styles
When you export a .docx from Pages, all style information is preserved. This allows you to prepare your Pages manuscript much like you’d Prepare Your Word File.
Pages Styles
You can apply any built-in Pages style when its name matches Word’s. This is true for most of the heading styles, though you will need to rename the Pages Heading style to Heading 1 so that Vellum can identify chapter titles.
Any style not in Pages — for instance, the ones specified in our Supplemental Styles page — you can create. Just ensure the name matches: the look of the style is not important.

When starting from scratch, use the Vellum Pages Template to create a new manuscript:
Starting from the template adds all of the styles mentioned in our Supplemental Styles page to your new Pages file, making it easy to apply Vellum-specific styles as you write.
