Written Note

Use the Written Note Text Feature to format a letter, then configure your Style to choose from a selection of fonts.
Adding a Written Note
To add a Written Note to your book, select the paragraphs in the note and choose the Written Note item from the Text Feature menu.

✨ This feature was added in Vellum 3.4. Make sure you are up-to-date.
Configuring Content
Paragraphs in a Written Note can be formatted independently. Each paragraph will be Indented by default, but you can assign a different alignment or inset amount.

As shown above, you can Right align a letter’s date and Left align its salutation. And you can use the Deep Inset option for a letter’s closing.
You can make these assignments using the popup menu to the right of each Written Note paragraph in the Text Editor:
Styling
By default, when the note appears in your book, it will use a cursive, “handwritten” font

You can find more font options in the Written Note section of Styles:
Keep Lines on Same Page
It’s possible for a page break to occur within the middle of a Written Note. If you’d prefer this not happen, you can make use of Keep Lines on Same Page, accessible from the gear menu:

With Keep Lines on Same Page enabled, the entire letter will stay together on the same page of your book.
Note: Keep Lines on Same Page is not supported by Kobo or Google Play. Vellum’s Preview will reflect this.
Sideloading Limitations
In Kindle ebooks that are sideloaded (rather than purchased from Amazon), there are some situations where the custom font used for a Written Note isn’t displayed:
- On eink Kindles (like a Paperwhite), a reader’s preferred font may override the written note font in ebooks that are sideloaded.
- The Kindle app for iPhone displays extremely limited formatting for books that are sideloaded and won’t show the written note font. Kindle for iPhone (and iPad) will only display custom fonts in ebooks purchased from Amazon.
